All the cutting systems are based on seeping energy into the material to change the chemical structures of the product. For instance, the thermal cutter uses energy from chemical reactions, electricity, or light in order to obtain high temperatures. Thus, we melt the material at the moment of cutting.

The mechanical methods use the kinetic energy of the tool movement to mould ductile materials by using this pressure application. Water jet cutting can be classified as a mechanical method. The energy generated by the water movement which is three times faster than the speed of sound, is used in pure water cutting and in abrasive cutting. Afterwards, energy is used in the work piece producing a micro-erosion. Pure water cutting doesn’t generate waste heat in the groove cut, so it doesn’t modify the material’s physical properties.

PURE WATER CUTTING

Pure water cutting is suitable for the following materials: textiles, elastomers, fibres, plastics, food, paper and others. Normal tap water is pressurised at a pressure level of 6,500 bars with a speed of about 800-1000m/sec and forced through a small precious stone orifice (diameter one tenth of a millimetre) to form an intense cutting stream. Consequently, the potential energy turns into kinetic energy, and the water jet becomes so fast that it can cut any material.

ABRASIVE CUTTING

For materials which are unsuitable for the pure water method, abrasive cutting is used. In the abrasive process, a fine-particled cutting agent is added to the water. The combination of water, air and the abrasive material is merged in the mixing chamber in order to accelerate the process. The result of this technique is a powerful jet which is able to cut, separate or drill materials of different kinds of thicknesses and densities, as metals, natural stone or reinforced glass.
